多數(shù)蠅種類宜在氣溫25～30℃之間生產(chǎn)繁殖，12℃以下則停止發(fā)育，不交配產(chǎn)卵。若溫度超過35℃，種蠅騷動(dòng)不安，39℃時(shí)不能產(chǎn)卵，40℃時(shí)種蠅逐漸死亡。蛆有避光性，當(dāng)強(qiáng)光照射時(shí)，就會(huì)鉆到糞堆底部。溫度及餌料養(yǎng)分對蛆的生長發(fā)育有很大影響，一般室溫控制在22～23℃，相對濕度60%～80%范圍內(nèi)，溫度愈高消耗養(yǎng)料愈多，蛆的生長發(fā)育越快，蛆就越大，化成蛹也越大。主要孳生在人畜糞便堆、垃圾、物質(zhì)中，取食糞便及腐爛物質(zhì)，也有的生活于動(dòng)物尸體中。種蠅有飛翔力，須籠養(yǎng)。采用木條或直徑6.5毫米鋼筋制成65厘米×80厘米×90厘米的長方形框架，在架外蒙上塑料窗紗或細(xì)眼銅絲網(wǎng)，并在籠網(wǎng)一側(cè)安上紗布手套，以便喂食和操作。每個(gè)蠅籠中配備1個(gè)飼料盆和1個(gè)飲水器。1個(gè)籠可養(yǎng)成蠅4萬~5萬只。種蠅用5%的糖漿和奶粉飼喂；或?qū)Ⅴr蛆磨碎，取95克蛆漿，5克啤酒酵母，加入155毫升冷開水，混勻后飼喂。初養(yǎng)時(shí)可用臭雞蛋，放入白色的小瓷缸內(nèi)喂養(yǎng)。飼料和水每天更換1次。育種蠅種蠅的來源，可將蠅蛹洗凈放入種蠅籠內(nèi)，待其羽化到5%時(shí)開始投食和供水。種蠅開始交尾后3天放入產(chǎn)卵盤。盤內(nèi)盛入2/3高度的引誘料。
